Adam Morrison Becomes Gonzaga’s New Defensive Coordinator

Adam Morrison burst onto the college basketball scene with long hair and mustache in 2005-06. He earned both Naismith and Wooden Awards along with Duke’s JJ Redick, was honored as Chevrolet Player of the Year, and was selected third overall by Charlotte Bobcats in their draft draft.

Early Life and Education

Adam Morrison may be best remembered from Mark Few’s early Gonzaga teams that featured as Cinderellas in the men’s NCAA tournament, including as their lead scorer and co-player of the year alongside Duke’s JJ Redick in 2006. In that year he led Gonzaga in scoring while co-player of the year alongside Redick himself.

Morrison was raised as the son of a basketball coach and, during his childhood travels across the United States due to new coaching opportunities presented to his father. Eventually settling in Spokane, Washington where he attended Mead High School and excelled on their basketball program.

After college, Morrison went on to play professionally for both Charlotte Bobcats and Los Angeles Lakers before returning home to Spokane with his wife and two kids to live as an analyst on Gonzaga basketball radio broadcasts.

Professional Career

Adam Morrison is no doubt well known in college basketball circles; he was one of the key members of Mark Few’s early Gonzaga men’s basketball teams that saw great success at NCAA tournaments under their leadership.

Though he was an elite high school recruit, college life wasn’t without its challenges: type 1 diabetes and other health concerns plagued him throughout.

He was drafted into the NBA, yet never was able to fully explore his talent there. Furthermore, he experienced depression during his tenure in the league. One memorable incident came in 2006, when he broke down during a game and was widely criticized. Yet eventually got back into it all and became an even greater player.

Morrison made Gonzaga known across the country during his illustrious career and was nominated for every major award available in 2006. Co-Player of the Year with Duke’s JJ Redick, Morrison also was honored as part of AP All-America team that season.

Matt Bouldin may not have been one of Gonzaga’s flashiest guards, but his consistency and steadfastness made him one of their most valued players. Bouldin ranks among the Top 10 players for points, rebounds and assists since 1990 at Gonzaga University.

Personal Life

Adam was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at eight years old; however, that didn’t deter him from following his dream of playing basketball at Mead Senior High School. Through hard practice and dedication he soon became one of its star players.

He was named to the West Coast Conference First Team during both of his freshman and sophomore seasons, second team All-America by both ESPN and Associated Press, Naismith Award Finalist, and Wooden Award Nominee.

He is an adept passer and shooter who excels at finding open players, having been an integral part of Gonzaga’s run to the Elite Eight in 2015. Now an assistant coach for Ohio Northern University Cardinals as well as defensive backs coach. Additionally, he holds a bachelor of sports management.
