Sophia Putney Wilcox experienced an attack by her then boyfriend when she was 17 years old, which has motivated her to share her experience in order to encourage other girls in unhealthy relationships to seek assistance and seek out guidance.
Adam Shigwadja entered her home on the evening of February 13, cut her across her chest, and set fire to her bedroom before fleeing. A judge later found him guilty of assault with intent to cause great bodily harm less than murder; consequently he will spend at least 29 years behind bars.

Adam Shigwadja hails from Newberry, Michigan. After attending Lake Superior State University for four years and earning a degree in nursing.
Adam was born to Roger and Ronda Shigwadja who relocated to Kalamazoo area in 2003 where Ronda worked as a nurse at Mid-Michigan Health Systems.
Sophia Putney-Wilcox was 17 when she fell victim to domestic abuse by former partner Adam Shigwadja. Following this assault, Sophia came close to death before recovering.

Kalamazoo YWCA recognized Shigwadja’s sentencing as an important milestone in their battle against sexual and domestic violence. They held a march through downtown Kalamazoo on Monday, to raise public awareness and urge them to support efforts that make it harder for people like Shigwadja to hurt other women and children.
Sophia Putney-Wilcox told a judge today in court that Adam Shigwadja had attempted to murder her by cutting her chest with a knife, pouring gasoline from a water bottle onto it, and setting fire to her bedroom – all without apology or justification from him. Shigwadja then broke down in tears before admitting his behavior in front of a judge and apologized profusely for what had transpired.

Adam Shigwadja and Sophia Putney-Wilcox had an erratic romance from 2011 until 2014.
Sophia reported in court that Shigwadja physically and verbally abused her throughout their time together, including sending text messages calling her vulgar names and threatening suicide.
After being denied her protection order request by a judge, Shigwadja broke into Sophia and her family’s home and attacked her before pouring gasoline over her possessions and setting her room ablaze.
On Monday, Shigwadja was sentenced to up to 29 years in prison for attacking his former flame in September 2014 while charged with home invasion and arson.
