Ben has been active in Air Force ROTC, serving in many roles such as Drill Team Commander of Silver Talons Drill Team, Wing Commander, Dining Out Officer, Field Training Preparation Officer and Cadet Training Assistant. For his commitment and participation he has received several awards.
Ben was active in several student organizations at Gadsden State Cherokee, such as Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and Student Support Services. Additionally, he mentored students and was twice nominated for University-wide Mentor of the Year awards.

Benjamin married Essie Mae Guthrie (nee Epperley) on October 15th 1899 at Virginia. They had four children together – including Effie Lena Barton who is their only daughter from this union.
Benjamin F Guthrie was born circa 1875 in Kentucky and resided in Johnson City, Tennessee 37601 USA for much of his life. On November 6, 1898 he married Ophelia Guthrie (nee Murphey) from Kentucky and they had 3 sons: Lucian G Guthrie was one. On November 16, 1971 Ben died and was laid to rest at Johnson City cemetery as an American politician.
