His Detective Inspector Skelgill Investigates series was translated into six languages and published in the U.S.A, Japan, India and Brazil, among other countries. He also enjoys writing in all genres, including non-fiction. Although he is not as prolific as a novelist his work has been widely recognized and sold over 100,000 copies.

Beckham sold his travel businesses in 1992 and began a new career as an educator and producer. He gave seminars and taught workshops throughout North America. Until 2001, he was the executive director of the Travelers Conservation Foundation, which is part of the United States Tour Operators Association. Later, it merged with National Tourism Foundation. The USTOA uses his profile in their marketing materials and has since named his philanthropic program Tourism Cares.
