Daniel Palermo – A Cystic Fibrosis Alumnus
Dan was passionate about his family, friends, muscle cars and Pittsburgh Steelers football team. Additionally, he was an ardent advocate of Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF). Often speaking on their behalf at dinners and functions; additionally he participated annually in their walks.
Dan Palermo serves as Vice Dean of York University’s Lassonde School of Engineering and as Professor of Structural Engineering.
Early Life and Education
Daniel was a native of Los Banos and attended its high school. An active member of his community, Daniel was a strong supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation – often speaking at dinners and functions they sponsored; additionally he participated in their annual walk. Daniel leaves behind his wife Barbara and son Aaron; sister Betty Riccobono from Medfield as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins who mourn his loss.
The Book of Daniel (Hebrew: Ma’aseh Yishma’el) is a biblical text which tells the tale of Daniel, the Hebrew prophet. His research interests are seismic repair and retrofit of concrete structures, shape memory alloy structural applications, innovative masonry walls design, as well as nonlinear finite element analysis of structures.
He has published numerous technical articles and book chapters, as well as winning multiple teaching awards including York University President’s University-Wide Teaching Award. Furthermore, he is a Fellow of Canadian Society of Civil Engineering.
He is an active speaker on employment law issues and has appeared as a guest on television and radio shows. Additionally, he is an ardent supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and has spoken at numerous dinners and functions for them.
Achievement and Honors
Palermo earned many honors and awards during his time at York University for both research and teaching. He served on the editorial board for Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering where he was honored as Outstanding Associate Editor.
His research encompasses seismic repair and retrofit of concrete structures, application of shape memory alloys to innovative wall structures, nonlinear finite element analysis of reinforced concrete structures and nonlinear finite element modeling of reinforced concrete structures. He participated in a reconnaissance team that traveled to Chile after the 2010 earthquake and tsunami to assess damage from both events.
Dan took great pleasure in spending his free time with his family. As an active supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF), he spoke at various dinners and functions to raise money, as well as leading groups of family and friends on annual walks for CFF.
Daniel Palermo was an enthusiastic sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was an active member of Los Banos Sportsmen’s Club as a life member as well as president for multiple years; additionally he held positions on many local boards and committees.
Born and raised in Erie, PA, he took great delight in spending his free time with his family, dogs, muscle cars and being an avid supporter of Pittsburgh Steelers football team.
Dan offers employers advice and representation in all aspects of employment law, from litigation avoidance, internal policies and collective bargaining negotiations, employee discipline and collective bargaining negotiations. His labor and employment practice spans across Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania and includes labor and employment issues before administrative agencies as well as state and federal courts. Dan is often presenter at legal seminars while serving as adjunct professor.
Medfield High School alumni Daniel C. Palermo died from cystic fibrosis. To honor him and remember him fondly, his family established a scholarship fund called Daniel C. Palermo Spirit Award which will recognize students who display “strong character, sense of humor, and an appreciation of family and friends”, according to its description.
