Daniel Palermo – A Cystic Fibrosis Alumnus
Dan was passionate about his family, friends, muscle cars and Pittsburgh Steelers football team. Additionally, he was an ardent advocate of Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF). Often speaking on their behalf at dinners and functions; additionally he participated annually in their walks.
Dan Palermo serves as Vice Dean of York University’s Lassonde School of Engineering and as Professor of Structural Engineering.
Early Life and Education
Daniel was a native of Los Banos and attended its high school. An active member of his community, Daniel was a strong supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation – often speaking at dinners and functions they sponsored; additionally he participated in their annual walk. Daniel leaves behind his wife Barbara and son Aaron; sister Betty Riccobono from Medfield as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins who mourn his loss.

Daniel Palermo serves as Vice Dean and Professor in York University’s Lassonde School of Engineering’s Department of Civil Engineering. His research interests are seismic repair and retrofit of concrete structures, shape memory alloy structural applications, innovative masonry walls design, as well as nonlinear finite element analysis of structures.
He has published numerous technical articles and book chapters, as well as winning multiple teaching awards including York University President’s University-Wide Teaching Award. Furthermore, he is a Fellow of Canadian Society of Civil Engineering.

His research encompasses seismic repair and retrofit of concrete structures, application of shape memory alloys to innovative wall structures, nonlinear finite element analysis of reinforced concrete structures and nonlinear finite element modeling of reinforced concrete structures. He participated in a reconnaissance team that traveled to Chile after the 2010 earthquake and tsunami to assess damage from both events.
Dan took great pleasure in spending his free time with his family. As an active supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF), he spoke at various dinners and functions to raise money, as well as leading groups of family and friends on annual walks for CFF.
Personal Life
Daniel Palermo was an enthusiastic sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was an active member of Los Banos Sportsmen’s Club as a life member as well as president for multiple years; additionally he held positions on many local boards and committees.
