A Biography of Daniel Royster
Early Life and Education
Royster was born in Dabney in western Vance County on 24 May 1869 to Fred Stovall and Alvada Green Royster; both his parents were farmers.
In 1943, Royster joined other auction warehousemen in creating a trade association to advance the sale of flue-cured tobacco. The Bright Belt Warehousemen’s Association became one of the country’s most prominent warehouse organizations, advocating acreage-poundage controls and price supports as well as cooperating between warehousemen, buyers and the U.S. Stabilization Corporation.
Roger Daniel Royster set an all-time rushing record at Niceville High School by covering 1,557 yards and 13 touchdowns during his senior year, breaking the Daily News football player of the year record by an overwhelming margin. Tragically, on April 11th 2009 at Eglin Air Force Base near Niceville Florida. he tragically passed away.
Professional Career
Jerry Royster was an all-around performer during his 16 years in the major leagues and two stints managing the Las Vegas 51s. He excelled at every position other than pitcher and catcher and excelled at bunting – throwing runners out at the plate, saving bases with sacrifice flies and squeeze bunts, even using his 6’2 frame to rob home run balls!
Kym, an accomplished collegiate player and 2019 graduate of Indiana University, boasts an efficient mid-range jumper as well as the ability to step into low posts to score. Currently she plays with Vimpelin Veto in the Korisliiga League.
Daniel has over five years of experience navigating the complexities of dialysis patient care. He consistently demonstrates compassion and teamwork while adhering to work schedules and being an excellent steward of resources.
Achievement and Honors
Royster was active in fraternal, civic and religious organizations beyond his work with the Journal. He served on the trustee of Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson and directed Vance County Savings and Loan Association; additionally, he chaired both state house and senate committees on roads, agriculture and education.
Royster achieved notable football accomplishments at Niceville High School as an undergraduate player, including breaking their all-time single season rushing record and being honored as Daily News Player of the Year in 2003.
Crona praised Murray for having an impressive research background and passion to address important health issues, according to Crona. Murray belongs to the American Society of Newspaper Editors as well as Lipscomb University Board where the Royster Fellowship bears his name.
Personal Life
Royster earned recognition at Niceville High School as one of the toughest players on their football team, running for 1,071 yards and nine touchdowns during his junior year despite standing only 5-foot-7 and weighing only 145 pounds.
Statewide, he served as chairman of the Vance County Board of Elections and four terms in the legislature. A strong proponent of tobacco regulation legislation, he advocated for increased funding of roads and schools and was an active member of both Henderson Tobacco Board of Trade and North Carolina Tobacco Industry Advisory Council.
Vermont Royster was an influential editorial writer at The Wall Street Journal from 1958 to 1971, writing his weekly column Thinking Things Over. His common sense undermined any pretensions of expert opinions while his compelling eloquence warned against an increasingly atheistic society.
