Daniel Rynhold – Dean of the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies and Director of the Revel Doctoral Program

Daniel Rynhold serves as Dean and Director of Yeshiva University’s Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies and Revel doctoral program in New York City. A specialist in Moses Maimonides and Joseph Soloveitchik works, Rynhold has held speaking engagements across Europe and North America and published two books: An Introduction to Medieval Jewish Philosophy as well as Nietzsche Soloveitchik Contemporary Jewish Philosophy (both available through Yeshiva University Press).

Early Life and Education

Rynhold was born and raised in England within a modern Orthodox Jewish family. Although originally interested in science, his gap year in Israel led to him discovering Jewish philosophy which opened new horizons for him – leading him to eventually become passionate about this subject matter and serve as dean and director of Revel Doctoral program at Yeshiva University in New York City as well as being a sought after adult educator delivering programs at programs throughout US and Europe as well as publishing multiple books such as An Introduction to Medieval Jewish Philosophy as well as Nietzsche Soloveitchik and Contemporary Jewish Philosophy

Professional Career

Daniel Rynhold currently serves as Dean of the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies at Yeshiva University in New York City, having joined them in August 2007. Prior to that role, he lectured in Judaism at King’s College London’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies. He is the author of An Introduction to Medieval Jewish Philosophy and Nietzsche, Soloveitchik and Contemporary Jewish Philosophy as well as editor of Radiical Responsibility: Essays in Ethics, Religion and Leadership Present to Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks (Maggid Books 2012). Additionally he has lectured widely at adult education programs across North America and Europe and will become Shoshana Shier Distinguished Visiting Professor in Philosophy at University of Toronto’s Center for Jewish Studies during Spring 2020.

Achievement and Honors

Daniel Rynhold has served as dean and professor of Jewish philosophy at the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies since August 2007, after previously serving as lecturer in Judaism at King’s College London Department of Theology and Religious Studies.

Rynhold has written extensively and serves as editor of several journals, such as “The Jewish Quarterly Review”. Additionally, he serves on multiple editorial boards.

Rynhold stands out in both academics and cultural pursuits; serving on the board of Jewish Historical Society of America and council of American Academy for Jewish Research respectively, among many other community endeavors and cultural organizations. As a result of these achievements, he has received several honors for his services.

Personal Life

Daniel lived his life to its fullest. He took on challenges many might avoid and thrived creatively. Whether through Lunch Ticket’s inaugural poetry collection or his memoir, his art always depicted animals and people with humor and pathos aplenty.

Daniel Rynhold was Professor of Jewish Philosophy at Yeshiva University’s Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies, where he also directed its Revel doctoral program. Specializing in Moses Maimonides and Joseph Soloveitchik works, he wrote two books addressing medieval Jewish philosophy – An Introduction to Medieval Jewish Philosophy (I.B. Tauris 2005) and Nietzsche, Soloveitchik & Contemporary Jewish Philosophy (Cambridge University Press 2019). Additionally he lectured regularly across England, USA & Israel settings both formal & informal settings.
