Dave Schreiner

Dave Shriner passed away in 1945 at the age of twenty-four. He had been a two-time All-American end for Wisconsin and a 1943 draft choice of the Detroit Lions of the National Football League.

He was tragically lost in action as a Marine during the Battle of Okinawa. His life and fate are described in Terry Frei’s book Third Down and a War to Go.

David Schreiner was an All-American end for the 1942 Wisconsin Badgers football team and known for his sure hands, deceptive speed and impressive defense. Throughout his college career at Wisconsin he earned a place of honor on the team.

In World War II, Schreiner was tragically wounded by a sniper. His story is detailed in the book Third Down and a War to Go by Terry Frei – son of Jerry Frei, one of Schreiner’s teammates on that Badgers team.

Currently living outside Lexington, Kentucky, Dave can be found enjoying life’s small pleasures.

Dave Schreiner was a man of compassion, generosity, pragmatism and humility who dedicated his career to serving the City of Phoenix in transportation and urban planning.

He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and servant-leader. In his free time he enjoyed traveling and spending quality time with his family members.

David was an active participant at Orangewood Presbyterian Church in Phoenix, Arizona where he served in various leadership roles over the years. Additionally, he and his wife were passionate Nebraska Cornhuskers football fans.

Over the last several years, Dave has dedicated himself to supporting Shriners Children’s Hospital. He and his wife established a family foundation for this cause, with all three sons serving on its advisory board. Since its inception, this foundation has raised more than $1 million for Shriners Children’s Hospital.
