David Asbury was born into a family of squires and justices of the peace, and grew up in a country house near Haddam, Connecticut.

As a young man, he joined the Methodist Church and began traveling as an itinerant preacher in his hometown. Soon, he became one of its most effective itinerant ministers, taking the gospel to those who needed it most.

He left his home in 1771 and embarked on a journey to America as a missionary, keeping a journal of his experiences along the way. This diary remains testament to his work as a missionary – it’s one of only manuscripts from that era that still exists today, making it an invaluable resource for historians.
