The late Dean Zayas Pereira was a talented Puerto Rican actor, director, playwright, author, poet, and dramatic arts professor. His work included hosting television shows, directing telenovelas, and creating theatrical productions. He was also a performer in the ballet and opera. Dean Zayas Pereira died on January 11, 2018.
Born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, on October 17, 1937, Dean Zayas devoted his life to the performing arts. He studied drama and acting on the island before moving to New York to complete his graduate studies. He eventually returned to Puerto Rico and became the director of the theater department there. He dedicated the next 50 years to directing students, and later received an honorary doctorate from the University of Puerto Rico. His legacy will live on in his many works of art.

In addition, he served on the executive committee of the National Association of Deans and Directors of Social Work. According to the Journal of Social Service Research Zayas was one of today’s most influential social work scholars.
In addition to acting, Dean Zayas was a playwright, author, director, and theater director. He was 83 years old and was active in his work right up until his passing. A remarkable legacy of outstanding professionals was left by him. His impact on the world will never be forgotten. And he will be missed by many. His family and friends are devastated by his death. His legacy lives on.
In addition to his work as a director and producer, Dean Zayas also directed plays and produced television shows. He worked with Telemundo on several telenovelas, and also produced several musicals. One of his most successful works is a play called “Habia una vez dos corazones,” which featured Fatima Seda as a lead. The play is meant to honor Sylvian composers.
Zayas was born in Caguas (Puerto Rico) and has a passion for performing arts since a young age. He later studied at various institutions in New York City, and then returned to Puerto Rico. After completing his Master’s degree, the Department of Drama at UPR was where he was employed. There, he worked as a dramaturg while also directing a rolling theater. Zayas passed away on January 8, 2019.
