“Gangs of New York” was nominated for Ten Academy Awards. It stars Martin Scorsese as a vengeful gangster. It’s based on a 1927 non-fiction book by Herbert Asbury. But to do so, Amsterdam must infiltrate William Cutting’s inner circle. In the process, his journey becomes a struggle not only for himself, but for the Irish in 1860s New York.
Ten Academy Award nominations
The movie Gangs of New York received ten Academy Award nominations and did not win one. It was produced by Alberto Grimaldi, Harvey Weinstein, Dante Ferretti, Michael Ballhaus, and Sandy Powell. It was directed and edited by Martin Scorsese. Bono, The Edge, and Adam Clayton composed the film’s music. They also wrote the lyrics.

The film depicts New York at a time when the United States was on the brink of division. The Civil War was in its second year, with the North suffering mass casualties, and the survival of the American nation was in jeopardy. At the same time, new immigrants were arriving in the city, seeking a better life than what they’d left behind.

A television adaptation of Herbert Asbury’s non-fiction book about the New York underworld is in the works. Miramax Television has attached Martin Scorsese to executive produce the project and direct the first two episodes. The screenplay has been written by Brett Leonard, who wrote ‘Shantaram’. While details are being kept under wraps, it is expected that the show will feature new characters.
Setting in the ‘hood
There are a number of gangs in New York. The MS-13 Gang, for example, is known as one of the biggest crime groups in the city. Its members commit robberies and burglaries. They also sell guns and engage in street violence. In fact, the MS-13 Gang was once investigated by federal authorities as a racketeering organization.
