George Buckner is an American football defensive tackle for the Indianapolis Colts. He earned his degree in athletics while at Oregon and was selected by San Francisco 49ers in the first round of 2016 NFL Draft.

One of George Buckner’s greatest accomplishments was his appointment as United States Minister to Liberia from 1913-1915. This appointment marked the first time an African American had been appointed to a foreign country and marked an enormous step forward for Blacks in America.

Buckner returned to Evansville, Indiana after his time in Monrovia. Here he began a career as a doctor and civil rights activist. An influential figure within the community, he served as leader for numerous organizations such as Cherry Street Black YMCA and United Brotherhood of Friendship.

He lived in Gifford, Florida with his 12 siblings and was an accomplished musician who played piano, guitar, saxophone. Additionally, he worked construction jobs as well as picking oranges in Indian River citrus groves.

At an older age, he began selling his paintings. He sold them to doctors, lawyers and staff members of a local telephone company.

In the 1950s and 1960s, he and his brother Ellis traveled along Florida highways selling their artwork to doctors, lawyers, and businessmen – becoming known as The Highwaymen.
