George Falls – A Natural Wonder

George Falls, situated in Western Australia’s Kimberley region, is an incredible natural spectacle. At 80 m tall twin waterfalls, they cascade over ancient orange-red sandstone.

Tourists love to come here for the breathtaking falls, which can be viewed from a cruise ship or tender vessel.

Early Life and Education

Early on, George developed a passion for learning. He enjoyed reading and had an intense curiosity about plants and animals.

George had a passion for surveying, which he learned to do from his grandfather. Aside from his academic accomplishments, George also enjoyed playing sports and being active within his community.

George earned a bachelor’s degree in botany from Iowa State University, becoming the first black student to receive this honor. He became an expert in his field and dedicated himself to teaching others about nature while furthering his own academic interests. George passed away on October 13th 2022 at age 87 surrounded by his loving family – wife Corrine, children and grandchildren; plus extended relatives including beloved dogs Cato and Zeke.

Professional Career

George Fell was a retired consulting engineer, an active member of several engineering technical societies and recipient of numerous awards for innovative engineering designs. Additionally, he had been an active Rotarian with South Glens Falls Rotary Club for 59 years, serving as president twice (1959-60 and 2017-18).

A career is the set of roles and responsibilities an individual takes on throughout his lifetime, along with the education and training needed to perform those tasks. It reflects one’s work ethic, dedication to learning, as well as their ambition to progress and develop further.

Achievements and Honors

George fell exemplified the dedication to natural area protection that permeated throughout his life. He pioneered new approaches in natural area identification, protection, stewardship and research with unparalleled success.

His long-standing dedication to the study of natural areas was an enormous asset to the NAA and its mission. Additionally, he exemplified those qualities of loyalty, kindness, and courtesy highly valued by those working in natural areas.

Every year, faculty, staff, students and alumni are recognized for their leadership and dedication to the University with prestigious awards. These honor individual academic staff employees in two categories: Limited Appointees and Non-Instructional Academic Staff; in 2021 an additional program category was added which recognizes units or departments primarily staffed by academic staff members.

Personal Life

George was born into an aristocratic family with connections to the royal court. His mother Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha was an overbearing figure who instilled him with rigid moral principles.

He spent much of his childhood on a plantation in Virginia, learning farming and hunting skills from Colonel William Fairfax – his neighbor.

In addition to his role as a civil servant, Fell became renowned for his efforts to preserve wild areas across America. From prairie remnants and mountain forests to desert canyons, he worked tirelessly to safeguard all kinds of natural habitats that were being threatened by highway development and other human activities.
