George Hyatte and his wife Jennifer Hyatte have captured the nation’s attention with their daring courthouse escape. On August 9, 2005, their daring and deadly escape outside a Kingston, Tennessee courthouse left an indelible mark on both the community and law enforcement agencies across three states.
On Wednesday night in Columbus, Ohio, the Hyattes were apprehended after a taxi driver called police to report they were on their way there. Police quickly arrested and extradited them back to Tennessee where they will face murder charges.
Early Life and Education
George Hyatt was one of eleven children born to Lucy and Alfred Bates. All but one graduated from Columbia University, with all except George going on to have impressive careers in their fields.
Throughout his life, he was an enthusiastic student and travel enthusiast. A member of the New York Philharmonic, he collected art works to commemorate his life.
He wrote and spoke extensively about European history. Additionally, he was an ardent philanthropist and supporter of the arts.
He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and was a lieutenant with the 7th Regiment of New York State National Guard. As an eyewitness to John Brown’s imprisonment and death at Harper’s Ferry in 1859, he set up a relief fund for his family.
Professional Career
George Hyatts was an iconic basketball player for the University of Pittsburgh, leading them to two Helms Foundation Championship seasons. A three-time All-American, Hyatts is renowned for his unique one-handed shot which earned him national acclaim.
After graduating from Pitt, he went on to become the general manager of the Hyatt Regency Trinidad in 2008. Additionally, he served as vice president for Hyatt Commercial Property Management.
On August 9, 2005, Jennifer Forsyth Hyatte tragically shot Tennessee Department of Correction transport officer Wayne “Cotton” Morgan while leading her husband George Hyatte out of a court hearing in Kingston, Tenn. She shouted, “Shoot him!” before opening fire and the guard died from her gunshot wounds.

George Hyatts achieved much in his life. He served as President of the American Rhododendron Society (ARS) and helped launch the Pioneer Achievement Award.
As a member of the American Research Society (ARS), he served on numerous committees such as the Research Committee and Long-Range Planning Committee. Furthermore, he contributed numerous articles for publication in The ARS Journal.
He served as a Navy Master Chief EW Officer and held shore assignments in Colorado, San Diego, and as Executive Assistant to Naval Forces Europe & Africa Fleet Master Chief. As an honoree of his profession he earned the Bronze Star, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, along with various unit and campaign awards.
His involvement with the American Rhododendron Society (ARS) continued throughout his life and left a lasting legacy. He has mentored numerous individuals who share an enthusiasm for rhododendrons and other plants.
Personal Life
At a time when many Kansas settlers lived on the fringes, George Hyatte’s family remained loyal to their state. He helped found Hyattville in Anderson County as part of an effort to provide jobs for residents.
Despite this, the media focused on their criminal activities. Their murder spree was just the latest in a long list of escapes from law enforcement officials.
On August 9, 2005, George Hyatte fatally wounded correction officer Wayne “Cotton” Morgan and another guard while being escorted from a court appearance back to a waiting prison van for his return home. He and his wife Jennifer fled, eventually being captured in Columbus, Ohio.
