Gigi Lucas and Her Non-Profit Organization SurfearNEGRA

On a typical beach day, you might see couples and friends posing for sunset photos or children creating sand castles with relatives; but you likely won’t find many Black people surfing.
Early Life and Education
Gwenna “GiGi” Lucas is an avid traveler and surf enthusiast. Additionally, she founded SurfearNEGRA with an aim of diversifying surfing.
She founded this nonprofit four years ago in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Their two programs:!100 Girls! and SURF THE TURF! aim to increase cultural and gender diversity within surfing.
She notes that when she first began surfing, few black people could be found in the lineup (the group of surfers waiting for a wave). Now more and more are joining, which she views as positive: It shows that ocean life can provide relief and become an outlet to express yourself freely – something she hopes her community youths see for themselves.
She has applied her passion for surfing to advocate for gender, identity and cultural diversity within the sport. SurfearNEGRA focuses on expanding diversity within surfing through strategic partnerships and year round programming.
Gigi Lucas was inspired to start SurfearNEGRA after witnessing a lack of diversity at her local beach in Jacksonville, Florida. Her goal is to increase diversity within surfing by paying for girls to attend surf camps while offering opportunities for those who feel uncomfortable in water to learn its basics on dry land.
Gigi’s passion for philanthropy led her to join NXT where she made her debut alongside Cora Jade on January 2021’s episode. Additionally, she serves as an adviser and business advisory to startup companies as they navigate the complex world of women in tech.
