Gigi Lucas and Her Non-Profit Organization SurfearNEGRA
SurfearNEGRA is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing cultural and gender diversity within surfing. To do this, they fund girls of color participation in local surf camps while teaching the fundamentals through its!100 Girls and SURF THE TURF programs.
On a typical beach day, you might see couples and friends posing for sunset photos or children creating sand castles with relatives; but you likely won’t find many Black people surfing.
Early Life and Education
Gwenna “GiGi” Lucas is an avid traveler and surf enthusiast. Additionally, she founded SurfearNEGRA with an aim of diversifying surfing.
She founded this nonprofit four years ago in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Their two programs:!100 Girls! and SURF THE TURF! aim to increase cultural and gender diversity within surfing.
She notes that when she first began surfing, few black people could be found in the lineup (the group of surfers waiting for a wave). Now more and more are joining, which she views as positive: It shows that ocean life can provide relief and become an outlet to express yourself freely – something she hopes her community youths see for themselves.
Professional Career
She has applied her passion for surfing to advocate for gender, identity and cultural diversity within the sport. SurfearNEGRA focuses on expanding diversity within surfing through strategic partnerships and year round programming.
Gigi Lucas was inspired to start SurfearNEGRA after witnessing a lack of diversity at her local beach in Jacksonville, Florida. Her goal is to increase diversity within surfing by paying for girls to attend surf camps while offering opportunities for those who feel uncomfortable in water to learn its basics on dry land.
Gigi’s passion for philanthropy led her to join NXT where she made her debut alongside Cora Jade on January 2021’s episode. Additionally, she serves as an adviser and business advisory to startup companies as they navigate the complex world of women in tech.
Achievement and Honors
Gigi Lucas is an entrepreneur and activist who has used her passion for surfing to launch a nonprofit that promotes diversity and inclusion within the sport. Her SurfearNEGRA organization runs two programs called 100 Girls Surfcamp and Surf The Turf that provide young women of color access to surfing camps as well as introduce it into schools.
In Everything in Its Right Place, Gigi shocks Mouth by showing up for sports announcer tryouts. She attempts to lure Mouth away from Millicent but he remains passionately in love with her so Gigi gives up.
Gigi works as co-host on a local television show in Jacksonville and helps her co-hosts find new talent, making some good friends along the way. She eventually gets promoted to become main host.

She currently works from home as an international market expansion expert for clients such as Nike, Skype and Liz Claiborne; in addition to this role, she founded a nonprofit to assist girls of color attend surfing camps.
Lucas launched SurfearNEGRA in 2016 as an attempt to celebrate and showcase female surfers. Through their nonprofit’s 100 Girls program and SURF THE TURF! initiative, SurfearNEGRA offers foundational surfing lessons both at sea and inland for young children to get acquainted with the basics of surfing.
