Young Sloan worked as a plater, red leader and cementer at Harland & Wolff shipyards. Additionally he held lunchtime prayer meetings in platers’ sheds before serving as an Orangeman.

He defended working-class Ulster unionists against accusations of liberalism (see Irish Weekly Independent, 19 January 1907). Additionally, he strongly denounced the Conservative party for supporting free trade and Joseph Chamberlain’s tariff reform proposals, which in his view were harmful to workers.

He denounced any misinterpretations of Magheramorne manifesto as anti-unionist, and claimed fellowship with official unionist MPs – although one, William Moore (qv), denied this claim. Sloan received support from lodges and hardline Dublin unionist antiritualists such as Lindsay Crawford. He attended Belfast petty sessions until lay JPs were barred.

Professional Career

Sloan has found success quickly in her short career, writing and recording for major pop artists like Dua Lipa, Charli XCX and Camila Cabello as well as popular EDM DJs like Kaskade and ODESZA.

Over history, there have been many influential teacher-apprentice pairs, from Plato and Aristotle to Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith. Perhaps the most significant was found at the very start of blues music – Ida B. Wells-Barnett and Herbie Hancock were just such examples.

Henry Sloan was one of the earliest figures in Delta Blues, yet very little is known about him for sure. It is thought that after World War I he moved to Chicago and never made any recordings; his exact death date remains unknown but may have occurred on March 13, 1948.
