Jaheim Hoagland is a New Jersey R&B Singer Charged With Animal Cruelty

Jaheim Hoagland is a nationally known R&B singer who was recently arrested on animal cruelty charges. According to authorities, he neglected 15 of his dogs. They were found in poor conditions, with nine of them having no food. One of them was so malnourished that it needed to be euthanized.

Officers responded to the scene on Monday, September 6 at 9:16 a.m. and reportedly heard barking coming from inside the home. After making their way through the house, they discovered six dogs in cages outside in the driveway. Other dogs were found in crates filled with dog feces. The one dog that wasn’t in the crate was a mixed breed boxer, which was taken to an emergency vet clinic for treatment.

Police also found a bud of marijuana under the driver’s seat. A search of the home found an additional nine dogs in poor condition. Two of the dogs were American Staffordshire terriers. Another 12 dogs were of mixed breeds. All 14 dogs were examined and released to a veterinary facility in Hillsborough.

In addition to the dog related animal abuse charges, Hoagland was also charged with two active municipal court warrants from Hillsborough and Newark. As a result of the charges, he was taken into custody and transported to the Somerset County Jail, where he was released on bail. He is required to report to pre-trial services weekly. His attorney is not yet known, but Emma Pallarino said that he may be representing himself.

On the same day, Jaheim was also charged with speeding and possession of marijuana. In the end, he was not arrested on those charges, but he did plead guilty to a misconduct charge in 2019. There are now more than a dozen unpaid federal taxes, as well as more than 200 marijuana related fines and penalties. At a recent court hearing, the Assistant Prosecutor argued that Hoagland should be detained in jail until trial. Although the prosecutor had good arguments, Judge Peter Tober denied the request, citing the backlog of cases in the county’s Superior Court.

For the most part, Jaheim Hoagland was able to avoid arrest by giving police a bribe. He consented to a search of his vehicle. Some of the items found were cigar wrappers, a t-shirt with the word “Hillsborough” on the front, and a small bud of marijuana. However, he could not be reached for comment on the matter.

The incident remains under investigation by the Hillsborough Township Police Department. While officers waited for Animal Control Solutions to arrive, they provided water to the animals.

According to authorities, a preliminary necropsy revealed that the dog that died was severely malnourished. It was only after the investigation that the animal was euthanized. The same is true for the other dogs, including the other nine that were found in poor condition.

In addition to the animal related animal abuse charges, Hoagland is facing disorderly persons charges. According to the prosecutor, Hoagland has failed to appear in court at least a dozen times.
