The John Basin is the watershed of the Saint John River from its headwaters in Maine to where it empties into the Bay of Fundy. It’s marked by high-elevation mountains and expansive snowmelt-driven rivers.

In April-May 2008, warm temperatures and heavy rainfall caused flooding along the entire Saint John River basin and several of its tributaries. This was the worst spring flooding in 35 years.

Early Life and Education

John Basin was born on January 5, 1935 in Vancouver, British Columbia but was brought back to London by his father when he was two months old. After attending schools both here and abroad, including Oxford University in England, John went on to study history there for three years.

After his graduation, he worked in public health in London and New York City, serving as director of Children’s Hospital Boston. When not working, he enjoys hiking, biking, geocaching and other outdoor activities. As a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine he is qualified to perform screening colonoscopies. As a family practitioner he loves caring for babies, children, pre-teens and teenagers; taking them on their first trips to the doctor’s office as well as providing sports physicals or travel vaccines if needed.

Professional Career

John has had an illustrious career that has taken him from the oil patch, legal industry and even beyond Earth’s atmosphere. He excels at handling complex matters that others may not even be aware of, let alone be able to close on time and within budget. John boasts a long list of high-profile clients who put their trust in his capable hands; thus making him one of the most highly regarded attorneys at Winston & Strawn. Additionally, John serves as Chairman for Winston & Strawn’s Los Angeles office and actively participates in pro bono activities for various causes including gun control groups, victims of sexual trafficking and veterans among others.

Achievements and Honors

John has earned many honors for his accomplishments and service to the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG). John’s greatest honor was receiving their House of Delegates Award, honoring him for his exceptional career within AAPG.

He served as President of AAPG and on numerous committees. A passionate proponent for education, his passion also extends to science.

He is a social work major at GBC and strives to assist students in finding their path towards a bright future. Eventually, he hopes to be a supervisor in this field, providing guidance for young adults. With enthusiasm, he looks forward to his time at GBC where he’ll continue learning as much as possible.

Personal Life

John was a passionate family man who loved being outdoors and spending time with his grandchildren. He was an organized perfectionist, meticulously planning out every detail of life’s events. In his later years, John dedicated an average of 40 hours per week to Evergreen Players – his favorite cause. Additionally, he served on multiple boards and committees such as Colorado Community Theater Coalition and Evergreen Arts Council.

Family members remembered John as being energetic and fun to be around, even when suffering from dementia. He was an accomplished technologist, often surpassing himself with the latest gadgets and devices. John was a proud alumnus of the Evergreen College of Technology and honorary member of Colorado State University Boulder’s engineering program.

Net Worth

John Basin is the founder of Freeport LNG, a Houston-based group with the capacity to liquefy and export 2.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. Additionally, he founded Basin Exploration before it was sold to Stone Energy for $410 million in 2001.

He owns a majority stake in Freeport LNG, which is the second-largest liquefied natural gas company by production capacity in the US.

His net worth, after debt repayment, is at least $70 million.

Cailloux has always been a workaholic. In 1968, he founded SEMCO – an industrial machinery firm in Houston – which later merged with Keystone International. Now retired, his net worth has increased more than 100 percent since last summer.
