Early Life and Education
As a student at Middlebury College, john buffum got into road racing. He was also a military officer and went to West Germany for two years to build bridges for the Army Corps of Engineers.
When he returned to Vermont, Buffum started his own rally car team. Eventually, he became the most successful American rally driver in history.
He was an eleven-time national champion and the first American to score points in FIA competition. He’s also a past president of the American Rally Association and has helped restart a number of rally events around the country.

John Buffum is the most successful United States rally driver of all time (11 national titles and 117 national championship rallies). He drove factory Triumph TR-7s with co-driver Doug Shepherd for four years, dominating both the SCCA PRO Rally series and North America Rally Championship.
During that period, he also drove in Europe; winning the 1983 Sachs Rally in West Germany and the 1984 Cyprus Rally, both with Audi Quattro. He also ran the 1969 Monte Carlo Rally.
After retiring from competition in 1988, he became the manager of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Pro Rally Series. He helped the sport maintain its stature through some lean years, and also restarted the Mount Washington hill-climb auto race. Today, he owns and manages Libra Racing in Colchester, Vermont.
