In 1802 Canova was invited to Paris by Napoleon and worked on busts and portrait statues – an endeavor which profoundly shaped French art. In 1815 he visited Lord Elgin’s collection in London, where he was struck by the naturalism of Phidian marble sculptures from the Parthenon.
