John Harm is a board-certified sleep medicine specialist and has spearheaded research on narcolepsy and other sleep disorders.
Harsh and his wife Ann have made a gift that will establish the first endowed faculty chair in Integrative Physiology at CU Boulder. Additionally, this gift will fund scholarships for students majoring in this field of study.
Early Life and Education
John harsh’s formal education began at an early age, as he attended several schools in the area. He studied literature, music, science and math while taking part in various sporting activities.
John had a thirst for knowledge, yet his school life wasn’t always smooth sailing. He struggled with concentration and became easily bored; moreover, John was prone to making poor decisions and ended up making more than one misstep. Despite his enthusiasm, however, John wasn’t always successful in school.

In 1964, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Nikolay Basov and Aleksandr Prokhorov for their groundbreaking work in quantum electronics that led to the invention of lasers and masers. Two years later, John received the Niels Bohr International Medal for his contributions towards peaceful uses of atomic energy. Additionally, John has been inducted into South Carolina Hall of Science & Technology, as well as being part of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
He was recently honored with the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award from Montana Board of Crime Control for his outstanding character and leadership in public safety. Currently, he serves as director of Montana Office of Criminal Investigations and chief of the Department of Public Safety.
