Early Life and Education
A child’s early life is one of the most formative and impressionable periods in their development. These years are critical in laying the foundation for social skills, self-esteem and an understanding of the world around them.
A strong school-family partnership is essential in supporting a child’s learning at all stages, but it particularly benefits children in the early years. This is because young children need consistent, responsive caregiving relationships and supportive community to grow into well-adjusted adults.
For this reason, early childhood education is a priority in many states and nations, with debates over whether developmental appropriate play should be the primary focus or if academic preparation in reading, writing and math is more beneficial. In both instances, UNESCO recognizes the importance of inclusive ECE programs that encourage a holistic approach to child development.
Professional Career
In the late 19th century, Kammerer began a career as a biologist at the Vivarium in Vienna. His goal was to bring Haeckel’s brand of Darwinism up to date with twentieth-century biology and culture.
He sought to demonstrate the modifying power of environment and the heritability of acquired characteristics. This, he argued, would allow a new interpretation of Darwinism.
His experiments, published in both technical journals and the popular press, and his ‘big show-lectures’ made his work very public. However, these also shaped his research in unexpected ways, and sometimes hurt his scientific credibility.
