He returned to the United States in 1819, where he began studying medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to this he made several voyages to China and the East Indies before settling down in Philadelphia as a physician.

He collaborated with architect Robert Smith on plans for St. Peter’s, a chapel of ease to Christ Church built between 1758 and 1761. Additionally, he was one of the first physicians to utilize chloroform, a benzodiazepine compound, on patients.
