On May 12, 1798, John Kearsley was born in Shepherdstown, Virginia (now West Virginia) and orphaned at an early age. He was sent to Scotland with his father’s family where he received a good education.
He returned to the United States in 1819, where he began studying medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to this he made several voyages to China and the East Indies before settling down in Philadelphia as a physician.
In addition to his medical career, he also wrote numerous essays and articles on chemical and medical subjects. His most influential work was Five Essays on Various Chemical and Medical Subjects (1858).

He collaborated with architect Robert Smith on plans for St. Peter’s, a chapel of ease to Christ Church built between 1758 and 1761. Additionally, he was one of the first physicians to utilize chloroform, a benzodiazepine compound, on patients.
