John Kenneally was born on March 15, 1921, in Birmingham. His father was Neville Blond, a wealthy Jewish textile manufacturer, and his mother, Gertrude Robinson, was an 18-year-old prostitute.
The family moved to Butte, Montana in 1924. The Kenneallys raised their three children in Butte, but they spent summers on the family ranch in Helmville, a tiny town north of Deer Lodge.
After graduating from high school in Butte, Kenneally attended the University of Colorado at Boulder. He later worked for Texaco in Colorado.
He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, and the Montana Institute of Technology and Engineering. He also served on the Montana State University Board of Trustees. He died on October 24, 2022, at age 85. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

He won the Victoria Cross for launching a single-handed attack on German troops during World War II. His deeds were a turning point in a desperate battle against veteran Afrika Korps soldiers.
After Kenneally’s deed he received thousands of letters and was praised by Winston Churchill himself. He was also the last surviving Victoria Cross winner with the Irish Guards.
Kenneally was born Leslie Robinson on March 15, 1921, and grew up in an area of Birmingham known as “the roughs”. His mother had earned enough money from a hairdresser and high-class prostitute to send him to King Edward’s College, Birmingham for his education.

He was a recipient of the Victoria Cross for his outstanding courage during the Tunisian campaign in 1943. On April 28 he was a Bren gunner with No 1 Company, 1st battalion of the Irish Guards, when they fought their way to the ridge known as Djebel Bou Azoukaz.
During this action, Kenneally saw a company of enemy Panzer Grenadiers preparing to assault the ridge. In a single act of extraordinary gallantry he attacked the grenadiers on his own, firing from his hip, and inflicting heavy casualties. The attack was a turning point in the battle for Djebel Bou Azoukaz.
