On June 30th, 2017 Meffert made a lifesaving save when he saw two people being saved in a plane crash while driving along the 405 freeway. As he passed by a low-flying aircraft, he stopped to help them out and saved both victims.

John Meffert was born in 1857 in New York State as the son of Henry and Mathilda Neibert. He passed away in 1920.

Meffert works as a firefighter for the Avalon Fire Department on Catalina Island, California and is also affiliated with the American Fire Service Association.

Meffert began his career in the Navy, serving seven years. During Desert Storm he was stationed on board a hospital ship named Mercy before returning home to San Diego. Initially, Meffert had intended on attending physician assistant school but ultimately decided to join Avalon Fire Department instead.
