Early Life and Education

Unlike many families of their time, the Evans family enjoyed the luxury of living in an urban environment. This was a far cry from their humble origins in Waynesville, Ohio.

John and his family had the good fortune to be born into a more forgiving era, where free education was not only possible but encouraged by government policy. This resulted in an educated and productive populace than it might otherwise have been, leading to lasting improvements in quality of life for generations. For John and his family, that meant more money in their pockets so they could pursue their dream of sending their sons off to college – something they had been working towards for many years!

Professional Career

Sand enjoyed a storied professional career, playing for six major-league teams. His stellar defensive play earned him recognition among the National League’s All-Time Best Defensive Shortstops.

Heinie Sand was an underrated talent, yet his refusal and reporting of an attempted bribe cemented his place in baseball history. At a time when professional baseball was still reeling from the 1919 Black Sox Scandal, this action helped to uphold the integrity of the game.

Sand played one more year for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1928, yet his batting average remained low and he made numerous errors. In December of that year he was traded to St. Louis Cardinals for $10,000 cash and spent the remainder of his career in the minors.

John is an internationally acclaimed sand sculptor who has achieved success in various media formats. A former fire captain, he brought the art form into the mainstream with appearances on The Discovery Channel, Martha Stewart Show and Sand Wars.
