After graduation from Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, John served four parishes in the Dallas, Texas, area including an inner city cooperative parish.
He is the author of the book Family of God, a collection of sixteen warmhearted new hymns. These hymns offer the church an opportunity to encounter God in a personal way.
Early Life and Education
John Thornburg was born on November 23, 1953. He and his wife Beth live in Dallas, Texas.
He is an Applied Community and Economic Development (ACED) Fellow. He is pursuing a master’s degree in kinesiology and recreation.
During his time in college, he also served as an AmeriCorps member. He also worked on a number of community development projects.
He is the author of several books. He has received numerous awards for his work. In addition, he has been recognized as one of the top 50 literary figures in the world. His most famous novel is Cutter and Bone. It is considered a classic of its genre. It was published in 1967. It was adapted into a movie in 1981.
As a leader in the firm, John counsels and represents a diverse client base on a national and regional basis in virtually all aspects of labor and employment law. He has defended clients in single-plaintiff, collective and class action litigation involving wrongful discharge, discrimination, sexual harassment, retaliation, Title VII, ADEA, FMLA, FLSA, ERISA, USERRA and WARN claims.
He also serves as a senior area consultant with the Texas Methodist Foundation, meeting pastors to match them with the resources they need to reach their truest and deepest purpose. He has a passion for writing worship songs, and he co-founded a community of creativity in Dallas called HOLY CITY.
Previously, John served as an executive search consultant advising boards and senior leadership teams in the pursuit of presidents/chancellors, provosts and deans and other senior administrators in higher education and healthcare. As a partner with WittKieffer, he has built an executive search practice with a proven track record of success.
Achievements and Honors
John Thornburg has a distinguished career in public service. He served as the United States Attorney and Attorney General for Pennsylvania. He was also the founder of Barnes and Thornburg, a law firm in South Bend, Indiana.
He is a fellow of The Hymn Society, an international ecumenical organization that honors pastors and hymn writers who are “faithful in their work and who share the Wesleyan tradition of integrating hymnody with piety.”
His achievements include serving as a delegate to the Pennsylvania Constitutional Assembly and chairing the State Committee on the Commission on Legal Ethics. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the American Legion and the National Association for Public Service Lawyers. He is a recipient of the University of Pittsburgh’s Distinguished Service Medal and the Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Excellence in Public Service.
