Torpy was one of the first names mentioned when HPU head coach Tom McConkey sought an assistant, and he quickly proved himself as a top-notch player and capable leader. He made a lasting impact on academia, serving as an integral member of the campus community and spearheading the construction of HPU library – which he affectionately named Torpy library). This impressive repository houses more than 3000 titles in one of Houston’s largest libraries. Contrary to its name, this centre offers an inviting atmosphere for learning and study. In addition to an abundance of reading material, HPU Library also features a number of cutting-edge programs like its liburt and various student services initiatives that will keep its students on the cutting edge for years to come.

Personal Life

Torphy was a retired senior officer of the state of Wisconsin. His positions included budget director under Gov. Patrick Lucey, secretary of administration under Martin Schreiber and top positions within DHS during Tony Earl and Tommy Thompson administrations.

He also taught graduate courses on public policy development, decision-making and capital budgeting and finance. A passionate tennis player and gardener by nature, Dr. Miller enjoyed spending his free time outdoors.

On December 19, 2022 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, he passed away at 80 years old. Survived by his children Laura McGuane-Heyman, Jennifer (Sean) Angeley and Alice (Danielle) McGuane-Zarnoweic; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren, he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
