Lauren Oliver is the New York Times best-selling author of Before I Fall and its Delirium Trilogy; Panic; and Liesl & Po. She hails from a family of literature professors; she spent much of her childhood playing imaginative games with her siblings.
Early Life and Education
Oliver was raised in Westchester County where she was encouraged to create her own worlds through writing. She began drafting her first novel during commutes on her Blackberry.
She has made an enormous difference to young adult literature by creating characters who are both believable and relatable for teenagers. Her books often explore sensitive and authentic topics such as love, loss and friendship in an emotive and accessible manner.
As an accomplished author and published contributor to various magazines and journals, she has earned multiple literary awards for her works. Now at Virginia Tech (VT), she serves as Associate Director of Living-Learning Programs where she collaborates with faculty principals, student staff members and residential life coordinators to foster an environment rooted in the values of VT’s Residential College model and create a sense of community that celebrates VT values.
Lauren Oliver is an award-winning author and tireless champion for social change. As a consultant with Oliver Wyman, Lauren assists organizations in developing sustainable business practices. Additionally, she currently works in Bhutan through Tarayana Microfinance to provide micro loans so individuals can build small businesses to break out of poverty.
She is the author of six YA novels: Ringer, Replica, Before I Fall, Panic and Vanishing Girls from her Delirium trilogy series. In addition, she co-founded boutique literary development company Glasstown.
She believes writers need to read as widely and take risks with their writing; her books have been translated into over 30 languages; Before I Fall was even made into a film!
Achievement and Honors
Oliver is best known for her young adult novels such as Panic, Delirium Trilogy and Before I Fall which was made into a major motion picture in 2017. Additionally, she penned middle grade titles including Liesl & Po and The Spindlers for young readers; additionally co-wrote two books in Curiosity House series written alongside H.C. Chester.
Oliver is a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, the national leadership and honors society for college women. Additionally, she served as president of her sorority’s scholarship committee; is an academic honor society; as well as being a scalpel reporter with Alpha Epsilon Delta- a pre-professional health honor society.
As an amateur violinist, she enjoys participating in the Silver State Social Piano competition and has received high marks and honors at both 2015 and 2017 music competitions.
Lauren Oliver is well-regarded for her ability to craft complex characters and vividly enact fictional worlds in her novels, while simultaneously addressing teenage issues realistically and authentically. Her inspirations include The Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird and Sylvia Plath among others.
She works full time as a writer in Brooklyn, New York. Aside from writing, she also enjoys animals and has fostered multiple dogs over time. Furthermore, she strives to reduce waste and purchase eco-friendly products whenever possible.
She has also written three dystopian novels for young adults: Before I Fall was published in 2010, followed by Pandemonium and Raven later that year.
