Early Life and Education
Lucas graduated from Huber Heights Wayne High School where she earned two-time third team all-Ohio selection and Greater Western Ohio Conference Player of the Year honors as a senior. Following that experience she went on to play soccer for Bowling Green State University, appearing in 81 matches and scoring eight goals while graduating with her bachelor’s degree in education.
Margie Lucas could serve as grand marshal at her own NC State Homecoming parade. Both her husband and son-in-law earned master’s degrees from NC State, while two of their daughters are junior Goodnight Scholars studying electrical engineering. Her family is so committed to the university that they host their own tailgate before every game and host monthly dinners for students; all three grandchildren also regularly attend.
Professional Career
Lucas Owens has over two decades of experience working in newspaper journalism, winning multiple awards for sports reporting and humor writing. Additionally, he has served on local sports committees and raised over $100,000 for bursaries given out to athletes.
He currently serves as Executive Chef at Julep Contemporary Kitchen and Native Fine Diner, both part of Native Tongue Hospitality Group in Greenville, NC. Taking inspiration from timeless recipes while simultaneously adapting them for modern American diners is his forte.
Owens is confident about his performance on Friday despite limited prior boxing experience, having trained every day possible at Merritton Community Centre gym and hoping this marks the beginning of an successful boxing career.

Lucas Turner-Owens (MBA ’22) has been engaged in projects to foster community growth and financial mobility since beginning at Georgetown. From working for an alumni-founded venture capital firm to acting as Leadership Fellow and facilitator for meditations at McDonough Business School meditation sessions – his projects provide him with a comprehensive view on how his educational experience at McDonough can apply to his career post graduation.
Luke created Julep as part of Native Tongue Hospitality to highlight classic dishes and preparations of American South cuisine. This restaurant offers comfort food prepared with great care, along with refreshing cocktails to engage guests and facilitate socializing. In 2018, Julep received the Terry M. Thomas Friend of Community Colleges award. This recognition is bestowed annually upon individuals who advance the cause of community college education across a statewide basis.
Personal Life
Lucas Owens is a husband, father, PhD student, and chef residing in North Carolina. He believes the dining experience should be all about socializing over delicious comfort food prepared with care by an accomplished chef and top quality beverages. Lucas currently manages two restaurants under Native Tongue Hospitality Group’s umbrella called Julep Contemporary Kitchen and Native Fine Diner that focus their menus around classic American South dishes and preparations.
He currently resides in Greenville with his wife Mechel and son Lucas Mack Owens. Additionally, Luca’s Barbershop in Greenville is his co-own. Additionally, he enjoys reading, gardening and antiquing as hobbies. Involved with both Williamsport Christian Church and St Vincent Williamsport Hospital Guild; as a fan of both Pittsburgh Steelers and Notre Dame football (among many other teams); swimming, golfing and spending time with his baby son are other passions of his.
