Johns is an emerging jazz vocalist who has been performing since she was 14. Her versatile style combines elements of jazz, gospel and R&B to create a very personal approach. She has performed at many of the leading venues in her home state and beyond, including Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York and Qatar. She also has a strong educational background, having earned a bachelor’s degree from the Hartt School of Music in Hartford and studied at the Jackie McLean Institute at the University of Connecticut.
On Friday she performs with Dominick Farinacci, a trumpeter who took the stage at 17 and has performed at major jazz venues throughout his career. He’s been featured in 10 albums and countless guest spots. Aside from his musical achievements, he is also the first Global Ambassador for Jazz at Lincoln Center and was a recipient of a four-time GRAMMY award.

She has served a musical residency in Qatar and honored her idol, Billie Holiday, as part of the New York production of “Billie and the Boys” at Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha.
Her latest project, Songs We Love, features three rising stars of the jazz world – Shenel Johns, Vuyo Sotashe and Brianna Thomas – combining their distinct talents to take audiences on a journey through some of the most iconic songs of early blues and jazz.

It also includes a bevy of other high-impact production elements, from costumes and set design to lighting and sound.

She was a winner of the Riga Jazz Stage Competition this past April in Riga, Latvia and has been featured at the Hartford Jazz Festival in July with the Harford Symphony Orchestra as part of an Ella Fitzgerald Tribute.
