Early Life and Education

In 1960, Harold and Carolyn Mary (Bennett) (Hammer) Maines left Speedway behind to purchase “Hammer’s Northwoods”, an outdoor lake resort near Sayner in Wisconsin that they ran until late in the 70s. There, they welcomed old and new visitors alike who came for fishing and area attractions.

Steve Sayner was a multi-sport athlete during his college career, playing punt protection team and reserve defensive tackle for Northwestern. During this time he amassed 14 tackles and broke one pass – earning all-conference honors in both junior and senior seasons as well as receiving second team All-America and Big East honors as well as three-time academic all-America awards. Sayner won Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors.

Professional Career

Sayner began all 12 games at defensive tackle for his junior team and led with 20 total tackles – second on the squad – as well as four quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery. On Sept 23 at Ball State he recorded multiple takedowns, made his inaugural career sack, broke up one pass, and also recorded his best game ever!

Achievement and Honors

Steve Sayner excels at combining three of his passions — God, teaching and sports information — into one rewarding career. His list of accomplishments and honors include being awarded 2018 Appalachian Athletic Conference Willie Belcher Sports Information Director of the Year; 16 CoSIDA publications and digital design contest awards from CoSIDA publications contest; four national wrestling championship media relations awards (Amateur Wrestling News).

As a teacher, he’s been recognized as an Outstanding Faculty Instructor multiple years and offers an Honors course on Working in the Digital Age. Additionally, he serves as core faculty in Renee Crown University Honors program and was honored with its Award of Merit by Association for Information Science & Technology in 2021.

Personal Life

Steve Sayner is an author who has published two books. His first, A Twist at the End, was a historical thriller based on true serial murder cases and trials, while three anthologies of gay erotic fiction included autobiographical essays written by him.

In the early 90s, he was an outspoken advocate for civil rights and LGBT issues. An active member of the American Civil Liberties Union, he also founded both the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and National Coalition for Equality.

His parents, Orrin Catt Sayner and Cora Alice Sayner, raised him along with two siblings – Orin W Sayner (older) and Bernice K Sayner (younger). Currently living in Gilman, Wisconsin he is married to Joan Suter with whom they share one daughter together.
