Steve Vassalotti
Steve Vassalotti is an American sports radio personality currently appearing on the John DeBella show at 102.9 WMGK in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Additionally he serves as both strength trainer and fitness expert.
Vassalotti served as assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL in 2013. He organized workout schedules, organized coaching activities, and developed hockey athletes.
Early Life and Education
He grew up in Philadelphia with his parents and two siblings. At 9 years old he witnessed The Beatles appear on The Ed Sullivan Show and President Eisenhower provide aid directly to South Vietnam. While at St Joseph’s he played on their ice hockey team while graduating with his bachelor’s in health, wellness, and recreation before receiving his masters from University of Dubuque.
Vassalotti currently works at Dakota State University as the head strength and conditioning coach, being certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). Prior to Dakota State, he worked at Marshalltown HS and University of Northern Iowa.
Professional Career
Steve Vassalotti has been hosting 102.9 WMGK radio in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for over two decades. Known for his humor and interviews with classic rockers, as well as sports news in Philadelphia he also enjoys annoying his co-host John DeBella on air!
Vassalotti is also an accomplished strength and conditioning coach. With a Master’s in Health, Wellness, and Recreation from the University of Dubuque under his belt and having taught Marshalltown High School courses while serving as Peak Performance director at SportsPlus Physical Therapy Marshalltown Iowa – now Dakota State University’s Head Strength and Conditioning Coach he continues his pursuits in strength conditioning coaching as he currently works on their campus as head strength and Conditioning coach.
Achievement and Honors
Vassalotti registered two sacks and two quarterback hurries to help the Spartans limit Waynesburg to only negative one rushing yard in their 40-17 victory. He also added four tackles – three solo ones!
Vassalotti leads UD with 6.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss, as well as four quarterback hurries (tied for first).
Mary Kay and Dan Vassalotti raised Dan, their son. Together with his wife Melissa and daughter Melissa, he currently resides in Philadelphia with his two brothers (one who plays ice hockey at Arcadia University), whom he considers his mentors. Additionally, Dan serves as an honor roll student and member of Student Council.
Personal Life
Steve Vassalotti currently resides in Philadelphia with his wife and two children. An avid sports fan who also enjoys cooking, Steve also owns Vassalotti Barbell LLC gym where strength coaching takes place. Starting out on radio in 2007 on WMMR before switching over to sports radio in 2015 before returning back to music radio via WMGK for John DeBella show broadcasts in 2016.
On air, DeBella is well known for telling stories from his personal life. One such tale involved his wife stowing two cases of beer away in their bedroom closet without him realizing. When DeBella invited listeners to call in with similar tales, his phone board looked like Christmas village! DeBella recently released an experimental blend of noise, blues, rock and indie in his album called In the Mix.
