Steve Walton (bsc, graduate dip ed, med, mce, jp), while studying at Knox University excelled as both an offensive and defensive lineman for their football team as well as shot put thrower during three consecutive starting positions and helped win 17 games overall- an unprecedented achievement in school history.
After graduating, he opened his first Ben Franklin five-and-dime store in Newport, Arkansas. Working tirelessly to attract customers, quickly becoming successful at running it. When his lease came up for renewal he decided not to renew it but purchased instead the building instead of renewing.
He then opened more stores across the country in smaller communities. Incentivizing his managers to run profitable stores was part of his incentive package; and he would fly regularly to check up on them.
Walton is one of the most recognized figures in business. A Hall-of-Famer and subject of ESPN Films 30 for 30, Walton revolutionized retailing while leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence how modern leaders run their companies and has made an enormous contribution through his charitable activities.

He was an attentive husband, father and grandfather known for being hard working, wise and quick witted. An accomplished wood worker and model builder, he belonged to North Side Baptist Church in Abilene.
Walton was an offensive lineman who helped Knox win 17 games during his three years at Knox, and also earned four-year letter awards on track and field.
